Case study — Hyland Nuxeo · Enterprise Content Management · CloudOps & Platform Engineering

A decade of hands-on engineering support for one of the world's leading cloud-native Enterprise Content Management platforms.

Nuxeo — now Hyland Nuxeo — is a cloud-native Content Services Platform (CSP) used by organizations including Verizon, Electronic Arts, Sharp, FICO, the U.S. Navy, and Boeing. NCS has been supporting the Nuxeo platform since its earliest versions, providing two specialized engineering teams responsible for platform reliability, scalability, release management, and continuous delivery across all customer environments.

About Hyland Nuxeo

A high-performance, open-source ECM platform trusted by the world's largest enterprises.

Founded in 2000, Nuxeo is an open-source Enterprise Content Management platform written in Java, with data stored across both SQL and NoSQL databases. It was acquired by Hyland Software in 2021, becoming Hyland Nuxeo. The platform provides a high-performance content management and indexing engine built on MongoDB and Elasticsearch.

Nuxeo is cloud-native, highly scalable, and offers rich multimedia support. It helps enterprises build and modernize content management applications through a low-code development approach, with AI-powered insights, custom machine learning models, and deep integrations with Salesforce, Adobe, and Dropbox.

NCS's role

Two dedicated engineering teams ensuring platform reliability since day one.

NCS has supported Nuxeo through two specialized teams that work in tandem: a CloudOps / Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team focused on operational health and uptime, and a Platform team responsible for configuration, infrastructure, and release management.

Together, these teams form the operational and engineering backbone of the Nuxeo Cloud platform — ensuring that every customer environment is healthy, compliant, and continuously improving across production and pre-production deployments.

Two specialized teams

How NCS structures its engineering support for the Nuxeo platform.

CloudOps / SRE

24/7 operational backbone

Serves as the primary operational support function for all customer-facing Nuxeo environments, ensuring health, availability, and performance around the clock.

  • Structured PagerDuty on-call rotation as primary responder
  • Datadog dashboards and AI-driven alerting for early regression detection
  • Reduces MTTD and MTTR across all customer environments
CloudOps / SRE

Zero-downtime production releases

Owns and executes all production releases using a blue/green deployment strategy, eliminating customer-facing downtime during upgrades.

  • Blue/green deployments for every production release
  • Minimized risk during Nuxeo version rollouts
  • Continuous delivery with no interruption to end users
Platform Team

Configuration & content architecture

Handles all Nuxeo platform configuration, customization, and content architecture — ensuring environments are correctly structured and consistent across customers.

  • Nuxeo platform configuration and customization
  • Content architecture design and governance
  • Migration best practices and cross-region replication
Platform Team

Infrastructure as Code

Defines, versions, and deploys all infrastructure using Terraform, ensuring repeatable, auditable infrastructure changes across every environment.

  • All infrastructure managed via Terraform IaC
  • Consistent, version-controlled infrastructure changes
  • CI/CD automation and modern DevOps practices
Platform Team

Release scheduling & validation

Schedules, validates, and coordinates every new Nuxeo platform release, managing backup strategies and ensuring delivery integrity.

  • Release coordination and version management
  • Backup management and cross-region replication
  • Pre-production environment validation before rollout
Platform Team

Compliance & CI/CD integration

Integrates Chef InSpec test execution directly into CI/CD pipeline stages, making compliance reports a first-class artifact of the build process.

  • Chef InSpec scans embedded in existing CI/CD stages
  • Scan results parsed and published as pipeline artifacts
  • Engineers receive compliance reports alongside build outputs
Single-tenant architecture

Every customer environment is fully isolated — no shared resources, ever.

All production and pre-production Nuxeo Cloud environments managed by NCS are deployed as single-tenant environments. No resources are shared between customers or between environments — a non-negotiable standard for enterprise ECM at scale.

  • Dedicated VPC per customer — tenant isolation enforced at the network level, not just the application layer
  • Isolation policies as code — isolation rules are codified in Terraform and version-controlled
  • Consistently applied — the same isolation standards are enforced across every deployment, without exceptions
  • Auditable by design — all infrastructure changes are traceable through version-controlled IaC
  • Pre-production parity — pre-production environments mirror the same single-tenant architecture as production

Two teams. One platform. A decade of continuity.

NCS's CloudOps/SRE and Platform teams operate in parallel, each with a clearly defined scope — but working toward a shared goal: keeping the Nuxeo Cloud platform reliable, secure, and continuously improving for every enterprise customer it serves.

What this enables

Platform outcomes delivered by NCS engineering — at enterprise scale.

  • Customer-facing environments that remain healthy, available, and performant around the clock through structured SRE practices
  • Zero-downtime production releases through blue/green deployments — every upgrade, every time
  • Reduced MTTD and MTTR across all customer environments through Datadog AI-driven alerting and dashboards
  • Consistent, repeatable, and auditable infrastructure changes through Terraform IaC applied across every environment
  • Compliance visibility embedded directly into CI/CD pipelines via Chef InSpec, with reports published as build artifacts
  • Guaranteed tenant isolation for every enterprise customer — dedicated VPC configurations enforced at the infrastructure level
Enterprise-grade
The Nuxeo platform is trusted by organizations such as Verizon, Electronic Arts, Sharp, FICO, the U.S. Navy, and Boeing — enterprises that demand platform reliability, security, and operational continuity. NCS's decade-long presence across both CloudOps/SRE and Platform engineering functions is what makes that trust possible at scale.
